What is Pilates?
Pilates is named for it's founder, Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). It is a system of exercising that integrates the full musculoskeletal system with a primary focus on the core. Breathing technique is used to assist with access to core musculature and therefore increased stability. Great attention is paid to creating a mind-body connection allowing for increased control of the body. This enables efficient work. Mr. Pilates himself referred to his method as "Control-ology," saying it is complete coordination of mind, body, and spirit.
Joseph Pilates began developing this method in England while working with wounded soldiers during WWI. Eventually he moved to New York City and continued his work along with his wife Clara. In the days before the Internet, Yelp, and 24-hour television, his reputation as a trainer spread by word of mouth. He became the go-to trainer in the dance community. To this day, his method is very popular with dancers as it creates long, lean muscle without heavy weights or mind-numbing repetitions. But the method can be performed by anyone with an interest in gaining strength, flexibility, and coordination. It can also be modified to work with all types of bodies including the elderly and those recovering from injury.
